How is the protection level of EPS helmets evaluated?

The protection level assessment of EPS helmets is mainly based on their ability to withstand impact and possible penetration capability, and different countries and regions have different standards and requirements. Here are some key safety standards and testing procedures used to assess the protection level of EPS helmets:

DOT certification: The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has established specific safety requirements for motorcycle helmets sold in the United States. Helmets that meet DOT standards undergo rigorous testing to evaluate their impact absorption, effectiveness of fixation systems, peripheral visibility, and other critical safety aspects

Snell certification: helmets that have obtained Snell certification undergo additional testing beyond DOT standards to meet the strict safety standards set by the Snell Memorial Foundation. Snell certified helmets undergo higher speed impact testing to ensure excellent protection against severe head injuries

ECE certification: The Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) certification indicates that the helmet meets the safety standards mandatory for use in European countries. ECE certified helmets undergo comprehensive testing to evaluate their performance in various impact scenarios, including frontal, side, and rear impacts

MIPS technology: Some EPS helmets adopt MIPS (Multi Directional Impact Protection System) technology, aimed at reducing the rotational force during oblique impact. There is a low friction layer between the outer shell and inner lining of MIPS helmets, which allows the helmet to slide slightly when impacted, thereby reducing the rotational force transmitted to the brain

EN397 standard: This is the safety helmet standard of the European Union, which includes requirements for materials and structure, impact absorption testing, puncture resistance testing, flame retardant performance testing, and other tests to ensure the safety of helmets

GB 2811-2019 standard: China's national standard specifies the classification and marking, technical requirements, inspection, and labeling of safety helmets, applicable to safety helmets used for head protection in workplaces

The evaluation process usually includes a series of physical tests on the helmet, such as impact testing, puncture testing, etc., to ensure that the helmet can provide sufficient protection in actual use. These test results will determine the protection level of the helmet, with higher levels indicating stronger protective performance of the helmet. Different certification bodies and national standards may have different testing methods and requirements, but the purpose is to ensure that helmets can protect the safety of users at critical moments
